Belgium Bans Disposable Vapes Due To Health Concerns
Belgium has taken action as of January 2025 to protect its youth from the dangers of vaping by enforcing bans on the sale of disposable vapes. This comes as part of a bold and wider move by the nation of Belgium to tackle the dangers of smoking and vaping. This comes with the wholehearted support of the European Union nations. Belgium also seeks to address environmental concerns around microplastic and metal particulate waste from vapes.
This is a 360 degree move from years ago when Belgium, amongst other European nations, had no legislation in place to tackle the dangers of public secondary smoking for a number of years. This is confirmed by an official statement from Belgian Federal Health Minister, Mr Vandenbroucke.
With this measure, we ensure that we remove an extremely harmful product from the market, which is also cheap and therefore attractive to young people.

Many smokers are still not aware of the full dangers of smoking cigarettes let alone vaping, despite global bans. Many are unaware that smoking fumes can act on a DNA level to supress certain genes in a permanent and inheritable fashion. Smoking can cause DNA methylation, which permanently switches off genes and is inherited. This is also how cancers can start, if cancer supressing genes become switched off. Of course it has been known for many years that cigarettes use causes cancer, amongst many other diseases.
While vaping or e-cigarette use is widely regarded as not being as bad for your long-term health as smoking, there are clear and persistent health consequences. Some of these include different cancers, such as lung cancer. The nation of Belgium has also decided that disposable vapes are environmentally unfriendly. Many nations, including Belgium and Ireland that are in the Eurozone, have been looking at controls on vaping for years. The European Union has a very proud history of health regulatory controls, being a world leader in the topic.
What Are The Disposable Vapes Banned By Belgium?
Vapes are sold as cartridges, containing a heating element for the e-cigarette fluid, that produce fumes of nicotine to be inhaled. This is a secondary form of smoking and was originally marketed as a healthier alternative to smoking a cigarette. Disposable vapes are ones that can be thrown away after use.
In order to lure more users into vaping, e-cigarette or vaping companies developed products containing different flavours. A lot of marketing was centred around young adults, to lure them into using their products. The health aspect, cost and use of different flavours has lured many young people into electronic cigarette. This is pretty much how vaping became popularised, but vaping is now becoming a lot less popular. This is as a result of possible health consequences.
As mentioned by the Belgian Federal Health Minister, Mr Vandenbroucke, the bans on disposable vapes are also to protect the younger generation from harmful products.

How Belgium Is Justifying Bans on Disposable Vapes?
The top reasons for banning disposable vape sales are because of primary and secondary health concerns, but also environmental concerns. Lets have a look at these in a little more detail to understand how the future of vaping and smoking could shape up.
Are Disposable Vapes Bad For Our Health?
Recently, many studies having been evaluating the relationships between vaping and lung cancer risk. There are a number of harmful chemicals from vaping or e-cigarette use, including flavouring compounds, that can contribute to the risk of developing lung cancer. There is also a similar number of heavy metal toxins, like lead or cadmium, that are inhaled with vaping as there are with cigarette use.
One particular study found over 500 chemicals in vaping cartridges, most of which are known carcinogens or cancer-causing agents. To put this in context, cigarettes were reported to have only 70 known human carcinogens by the IARC. These are chemicals generated by the heater element within the vape that can cause DNA genotoxicity and oxidative stress. These sorts of studies are why Belgium has enforced bans on sales of disposable vapes.
The exhaled fumes may also pose a secondary smoking risk that has become another concern for researchers. Levels of certain toxic chemicals vapours have been detected in E-cigarette conventions and arenas that have caused these concerns. This is also a reason why bans on disposable vapes have been enforced by Belgium.
Electronic waste is a hot environmental topic, posing a clear risk to public health. Waste products from vapes and e-cigarettes have the potential to leach toxins into the natural environment. These toxins include lead, lithium and mercury. Eventually, this has the potential to harm human and animal health if they leach into the soils and oceans. Some of these are very dangerous metals that are inhaled in the vapour that comes from the metal heating coil. They can also appear as metal nanoparticulates. Lead nanoparticles, for example, can cause respiratory and nervous system changes.
Disposable Vapes Ban & Microplastics
The science says that vapes produce microplastics in addition to toxic pollutants. These microplastic toxicants are released from the disposable vaping cycle. Microplastics are effectively tiny plastic molecules or particles that are difficult for nature to decompose. This is in complete contrast to organic food for example, that decomposes quite readily into organic matter.
Natural organic waste provides an ecosystem service, helping all pretty much all organisms. Plastics can take many years to fully degrade into safe molecules. Microplastics have also caused a massive debate in concern with the oceans. Many cosmetic and bathing products have had to pull out different ingredients that were seen to be responsible for serious ecological damage.
For protecting the environment, it is not just a case of looking out for the animals. Many people regularly consume seafood products and plastics can enter the food chain, causing cancer. The bans on disposable vapes enforced by Belgium should encourage a cleaner environment.

Considerations On The Future Of Vaping and Smoking
Whenever new technology is released, there is a race on to confirm the evidence for public health safety. This is exactly the same process as there is with new pharmaceuticals after testing. Many drugs failing to stay on the market years after release, because of harmful side effects, with 1 in 7 new drugs being recalled over a 30 year period by the FDA.
The FDA drug recall rate is very high. The reality is that the human body has a certain natural state it needs to maintain. Many products are just simply not compatible in the long term with the human body. This is why we emphasise the importance of maintaining as natural and healthy lifestyle as you can possibly lead.
To us here this ban on vaping and e-cigarettes is no surprise at all. The health consequences of e-cigarettes seem to have been masked for years. There are still no long-term impact studies of e-cigarette use and vaping. Many vapers would be unaware of the consequences of their habit without the right information and this is really important for people to make healthy choices.

Vaping Health Dangers
There are major health & environmental concerns surrounding disposable e-cigarettes
Vaping fumes were shown to contain around 500 known carcinogens
This compares to 70 carcinogens identified from regular cigarettes
Fumes, heavy metals, microplastics and other by products of disposable vaping pose a threat to the environment

Conclusions
Vaping fumes were shown to contain around 500 known carcinogens. This poses some threat to public safety and health. The health advisory board in Belgium seem to have also identified microplastics as a possible environmental and ecological threat.
This has led to a total ban on disposable vapes and e-cigarettes in Belgium. While we emphasise that people should be able to make the right choices for their own health and safety, there is a clear benefit to the regulations set by the nation of Belgium.
Young people can be easily influenced into making choices they donโt understand. We anticipate that many other nations, including Ireland, will follow suit in banning sales of vapes or vaping itself.
